Death toll hits 26 in fresh Benue herdsmen attack

• Man loses two wives , three children

• Killings, reprisals over maimed cows, say police

Twenty- six people have been allegedly killed in the latest attack by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State.

The herders stormed Omusu community in Okpokwu Local Government Area around 3 :30 p. m . on Monday and opened fire on the residents . Most of the victims were women , children and the aged .

“The herdsmen came from Ado Local Government Area , through River Ogege. We were holding a meeting when suddenly we began to hear gunshots behind the LGEA Primary School in Idumoga . I ran towards my father ’ s place but I could not save him because the herdsmen had entered the house . Villagers were running in all directions , ” said Peter Ojobo, a survivor .

Another, Paul Abba , told The Guardian: “ The herdsmen were over 50 . They came and started shooting and killing people . They did not even spare women and children . I ran into my house and hid myself when I saw them coming. They went about killing. It was only God that saved me . ”

One farmer , Godwin Igoche, lost his two wives and three children in the attack .

Three women and five children who had locked themselves up in a room were found slaughtered. One Eric Attah , who with his wife had gone to the stream to fetch water , was also killed .

Governor Samuel Ortom visited the community yesterday . He described the killings as unacceptable and regrettable , coming barely hours after the chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area had held a meeting with the residents and herdsmen following an altercation.

He called for the perpetrators to be brought to book .

He said : “This is the highest level of injustice to our people . How can anyone just wake up and kill 26 persons in one day? What have seven and eleven -year – old children done to warrant this treatment ? How can a seventy – year – old man rustle cattle ? Rustling of cattle is done by professional herders who , in this case , are still herdsmen .

“This law (anti – grazing) was meant to protect both herdsmen and farmers and is the only solution to the herdsmen /farmers ’ crisis. When Zamfara enacted Sharia law , those who could not obey it left the place without causing any problems . Why is the Benue case different?

“If we go by what the Minister of Defence, Dan Ali Mansur , said that these are foreign herdsmen , why should we leave our borders open to allow herdsmen come into the country and kill our people .

“This is not right . The law must be respected . In Benue , we believe in the rule of law and that is why , instead of taking laws into our hands , we enacted the law prohibiting open grazing, which also provides for the establishment of ranches. ”

The Benue State police command on Monday had released a statement saying only 15 persons were killed . It said the attack was a reprisal by the herdsmen who claimed youths in the area had maimed their cows .

The statement added that following the alleged maiming, a peace meeting was held between the two factions before the killings few hours later.

Governor El-Rufai under fire for ignoring beheading in Kano Yesterday

image

Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed his sad feelings about the sudden demise of Muhammad Ali Nigerians blasted the governor for mourning the death of the legendary boxer but ignoring the beheading in Kano state
Governor Nasir El-Rufai has come under fire for mourning the death Muhammad Ali but ignoring the beheading in Kano.
Nigerians have strongly criticized Governor Nasir El-Rufai for mourning the death of Muhammad Ali but ignoring the beheading in Kano state.
On Saturday, June 4, the governor took to his Facebook to express his feelings about the sudden demise of the legendary boxer.
“SAD, VERY SAD: I woke up this morning to learn of the death of boxing legend, civil rights icon and an inspiration to my generation – Muhammad Ali.
“His life inspired many if us to insist on standing firmly on basic life principles, prepare to suffer for what we believe and expect victory after adversity.
“May the Almighty Allah grant Muhammad Ali’s soul abode in Aljannah Firdaus, Amin,” he wrote.

The post provoked massive negative reactions from Nigerians.
“Muhammad Ali is millions of miles away from you yet his death saddens you but yesterday, in your backyard, in Kano state precisely,a woman was murdered in cold blood by blood thirsty Muslims and it saddens you NOT ??? Otherwise you would have put a simple statement condemning it, sympathize with the family maybe but at least condemn the killing since Islam is rumored to be a religion of peace! But Muhammad Ali whom you don’t know dies peacefully and it saddens you? Hypocrisy is a disease because it involves one lying to one’s self,”
Chigozie ‘Governator noted.
“It is hypocritical that your brothers beheaded a woman in Kano state and you didn’t deem it fit to condemn such act and you are here reporting the death of Mohammed Ali. God will not forgive Lugard for this 1914 mistake. Useless set of God forsaken people,” Collins Ohaeri stressed.
“If Muhammad Ali were alive today he would write about you and say: This dwarf is a bumbling fool. He is trying to use me to look cool. They murdered a woman, he was quiet. Now he wants to wish me a good night,” Hymar Idibie David wrote.
“No I woke up to hear of an innocent woman in Nigeria that was beheaded in Kano, a neigbouring state to Kaduna. Mr Governor did you read about it too? She is my legend. Her innocent blood will soonest destroy Kano state,” Offem Ken warned El-Rufai.
“My dear governor, what about the woman that was beheaded. You didn’t wake up with surprise, nobody has come out to condemn the killing of that innocent soul. Even her head was paraded on the street while our security operatives watch…” Tosin Adeleye lamented.
“You mourn the death of Mohammed Ali, a boxing legend, but remain mute over the beheading of an innocent woman in Kano. All the killings and butchering of innocent easterners which your Fulani kinsmen have been carrying in the past is not enough for you to sympathize with the beleaved families. We pray that you will never go back to government house come 2019,” Sunny John Daniels wrote.

#Niger_Delta_Militants FG to consult with Governors, community leaders over crisis

image

According to the President’s Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, the move by the government is aimed at restoring peace in the troubled region.

The Federal Government has commenced consultations with Governors and community leaders in the oil rich Niger Delta region.
According to the President’s Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, the move by the government is aimed at restoring peace in the troubled region.
Enang in a statement made available to newsmen, said:
The federal government officials, at the moment, are in their various states talking not only to their state governors but aggrieved persons on the way of resolving the problems arising from bombing of oil installations in the Niger Delta region.
The Minister of Niger Delta, the Minister of Interior, the Coordinator of the Amnesty Office have been taking actions consistent with their powers and what I know, is that almost all the ministers and officers from the Niger Delta region have returned to their respective states.
They are in their respective zones and their respective blocs to talk to their leaders and their aggrieved persons on the need for us to maintain peace.
That is going on and they are the representatives of Mr. President. So, I will not tell you what Mr. President wants to do in person but these are officers and offices which are dealing with this matter.
What I know they have done, which some of us are involved in doing by virtue of coming from that zone and by virtue of working with them, is been telling our people that the economy of the people is bleeding and the nation is hemorrhaging and that we cannot, given the low price of oil, go on certain actions that will further reduce the earnings of Nigeria.
We have lost the earnings in terms of price, so we shouldn’t lose earnings in terms of production. I am sure that you are aware that we budgeted 2.2 million barrel per day and production few weeks ago, lowered to 1.4 million per day and it is climbing to 1.6 and 1.7 per day million per day and that is capable of affecting the money expected from oil.
These are the things we are preaching to our people and preaching to the governors of our respective states.
Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Avengers have promised to unleash mayhem in the region till the government meets their demands.

South Carolina Governor signs legislation that bans abortion after 19 weeks

image

South Carolina has become the latest state in the United States to ban abortion. Republican Gov. Nikki Haley signed the legislation yesterday and the law outlaws all abortions at 20 weeks beyond fertilization unless the mother’s life is in jeopardy or a doctor determines the fetus can’t survive outside the womb.
Like most similar laws, it contains no exceptions for rape or incest. According to the Bill sponser, Republican Wendy Nanney, she is hopeful the law is a step to eventually get rid of abortion altogether.
Doctors now face up to $10,000 in fines and three years in prison if they are found carrying out an abortion illegally.
